Day 1: Arrival in Shanghai

  • Arrive at the airport, where our enthusiastic Adventure Leaders will be waiting for you at the arrivals gate, waving our Learning Adventure flag.
  • Transfer to your accommodation and once you are refreshed and settled, come together for a trip briefing. Your adventure leaders will explain details about your travel plans, give advice on how to adapt to the local culture and outline how you will stay safe during your travels.
  • Stroll along East Nanjing road to the Bund, one of Shanghai’s most iconic locations, digging into the city’s colonial history and discovering how it gained its current prominence.

Day 2: Mandarin Class and river cruise

  • Brush up on your language skills by taking a Mandarin class in Shanghai.
  • Explore the Yu Yuan Garden and its blend of traditional architecture and modern shop fronts. Practise your Chinese while bargaining for souvenirs. Also take a visit to Cheng Huang Temple, a traditional Chinese temple that is dedicated to the worship of the city’s protective deities.
  • Indulge in a delectable culinary experience by savoring the renowned Shengjian dumplings in Shanghai during your lunchtime. Treat your taste buds to the exquisite flavors of these dumplings, which are celebrated for their unique blend of textures and mouthwatering fillings.
  • Tour Shanghai’s glitzy financial district, Lujiazui, and head to the top of China’s tallest building, the Shanghai Tower, for a view of the city.
  • Take a cruise on the Huangpu River, and spot ‘Shanghai through the ages’: colonial buildings reflect against skyscrapers on either side of the river.

Day 3: Calligraphy workshop and acrobatics show

  • Embark on a picturesque journey and discover Zhujiajiao, an enchanting water town nestled just outside the bustling city of Shanghai.
  • Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of China by participating in a captivating workshop led by local experts, where you can delve into the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Learn the intricacies of brush strokes, the symbolism behind each character, and the history that shapes this revered art form. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, you’ll have the opportunity to practice and refine your own calligraphy skills, gaining a deeper appreciation for the beauty and significance of this ancient craft. Allow yourself to be inspired as you unlock the secrets of Chinese traditional calligraphy and create your own unique masterpieces.
  • Watch stunning acrobatics at an ERA performance. Enjoy an unforgettable evening filled with jaw-dropping stunts, dazzling choreography, and mesmerising storytelling.

Day 4: Cooking class

  • Embark on a culinary adventure in the vibrant city of Shanghai and immerse yourself in the art of Chinese cooking through a memorable cooking class. Shanghai is renowned for its diverse and tantalizing cuisine—a harmonious blend of regional flavors, fresh ingredients, and culinary craftsmanship. By taking a cooking class, you will not only savour authentic tastes but also gain a deeper understanding of the cultural significance and history behind the dishes.
  • Explore the charming alleyways of the Former French Concession, which was home to a diverse, international community of business people, artists, and gangsters. Join locals as they exercise or “square” dance in one of the remaining French-designed parks.
  • Hop on a high-speed train, an exceptional mode of transportation that seamlessly connects these Shanghai and Beijing. It offers a fast, comfortable, and convenient way to travel between the capital city and the historical heartland.

Day 5: Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven

  • Head to the serene gardens of the Temple of Heaven where you will come together to practice some traditional tai chi exercises. Then head deeper into the temple complex, stopping for a group photo in front of the blue-tiled Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest.
  • Take a walk in Tiananmen Square. It is an educational and enlightening experience, as it offers a glimpse into China’s rich history, culture, and the significance of this iconic landmark in shaping the nation’s past and present.
  • Learn about China’s imperial history at the Forbidden City. As you enter through the imposing Meridian Gate, explore the sprawling complex that was once the exclusive residence of emperors for over 500 years. Take in the panoramic view of historic Beijing from Jingshan Park. Witness a breath-taking sunset over Beijing’s skyline.
  • Enjoy a Peking Duck dinner, a world-famous Beijing delicacy.

Day 6: Summer Palace and Hutongs of Beijing

  • Try some traditional breakfast In Beijing! locals and visitors start their day with a satisfying breakfast that may include Jianbing, Douzhi, Baozi, Shao Bing, and a warm bowl of Congee.
  • Take a relaxing stroll inside the Summer Palace, where the Emperor’s household would go to escape the heat. Walk through the spectacular grounds and take a wooden boat across the palatial lake.
  • Take a guided tour of the Hutongs of Beijing, narrow alleyways that wind their way through traditional courtyard homes, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich past.
  • Enjoy an original Beijing-style variety show that is listed as the first key tourism performance project in Beijing while having Chinese tea. The 90-minute show covers Beijing opera art, Peking opera singing, Chinese kung fu, Sichuan opera face changing, tea art performance, national song and acrobatics.

Day 7: Great Wall and Hotpot

  • Travel to the outskirts of the city and hike to a secluded and incredibly beautiful section of the Great Wall, avoiding the crowds.
  • Try traditional Hotpot, a boiling broth for dipping meat and vegetables. A China must-do! Hotpot, also known as “huǒ guō” in Mandarin, is a traditional Chinese dish that involves cooking a variety of ingredients in a simmering, communal pot of flavourful broth. The broth is usually divided into two sections: a mild side for delicate ingredients and a spicy side for those seeking an extra kick. This customizable aspect of hot pot allows each diner to create their own personal flavor profile by choosing from an extensive array of dipping sauces, such as sesame, garlic, soy, and vinegar.

Day 8: Travel home

  • Today, it’s time to head back to the airport for your flight home.
