Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Provence

  • Touch down at the airport and be greeted at the airport by an Adventure Leader. They’ll assist with the transfer to your accommodation, and run through safety guidelines and a trip briefing on your Classics school trip to France as you take a coach into the city centre.
  • Once you’re settled in your accommodation, it’s time to head out into Nîmes for a walking tour to see some amazing sights and learn more about the city’s history. Visit the Maison Carrée, one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the world and explore the city’s beautiful old town.
  • Enjoy a welcome dinner with some classic French cuisine.

Day 2: Roman Nîmes

  • Head into the centre of Nîmes and visit the famous amphitheatre. This impressive Roman building is so well-preserved it is sill used for modern day events! Learn all about the spectacles that would have happened here during the Roman era.
  • Walk through the centre of Nîmes to the Romanite Museum. Learn all about the Roman occupation of the region and admire some of the exquisite remains found in and around the city.
  • Travel out of Nîmes to view the incredible Pont du Gard, one of the tallest Roman aqueducts ever built. Take in this magnificent feat of engineering, then visit the museum that explains all about Roman architecture. Head back to Nîmes for another delicious French dinner!

Day 3: Glanum and Arles

  • Drive east to the Roman city of Glanum, once an important city of the region and now an impressive archaeological site. Learn about how Roman cities were developed and explore the remains of different types of public and private buildings.
  • Drive onto another impressive Roman city, but one that is still occupied today – Arles. Visit the amphitheatre and museum that houses many Roman statues and artefacts, including a Gallo-Roman wooden river barge, complete with cargo!
  • Return to Nîmes for dinner at a local restaurant. Wander through the streets and treat yourself to an ice cream after a long day.

Day 4: Travel home

  • It’s time to bid au revoir to Provence and head home, full of knowledge and memories from Roman France!
