Visiting a country to see its top tourist spots may be fun, but going abroad can be more than just your standard tourist holiday. On our CAS trip to Chiang Mai, trip students create meaningful connections and build an understanding of different cultures and communities. They also get hands-on volunteer experience that will have a direct positive impact on Thailand, all while getting to see the world at the same time.
You could read all the books in the world on a country and its culture but you can’t beat the learning experience of immersing yourself in it fully. The best way to learn about another culture and way of life is through communicating with local people and hearing their lived experiences.

Feel less detached from world issues
Getting students out of the classroom and visiting the Elephant sanctuary will help open your students’ eyes to global environmental issues. With deforestation and climate change being one of, if not the biggest issue of today, it is vital for students to learn about and get involved with supporting an endangered species.
At the sanctuary, students will get the chance to see how non-governmental and community organisations are run. It is easy to feel detached from problems being faced on the other side of the world, but this experience could create a deeper sense of care and awareness for wildlife and the environment for all students – something they wouldn’t get from being the classroom! Bridging the gap between the classroom and the real world can be a challenge, but is something that volunteering in a safe and inclusive environment can play a huge part in.

Create a generation of sustainable thinkers
One of the best ways to make and strengthen connections with people is through taking part in a shared activity. Volunteering has been proven to improve self-confidence by getting people out of their comfort zone and dealing with real-world problems. Taking part in a community service project that involves recycling plastics and coming up with ways to be more sustainable will allow students to really think about their own footprint on the world and how they can adapt and create solutions for the future.
As we know sustainability is a topic that will only be increasingly discussed in the future. Why not give your students the chance to see things from another community’s perspective and ignite a passion in them to become part of a more sustainable generation? There is a need for people to reflect on their relationship with the environment and this work can give students the time to do just that.
