teamLab Planets TOKYO
Lose yourself in the immersive world of teamLab Planets. A modern art museum with a difference, this huge exhibition space boasts nine distinct artworks that visitors walk amongst. The aim of such exhibitions? To use digital art and immersion to blur the boundaries of technology and nature.
Visitors wander through The Garden Area, an exhibition which features 12,000 live orchids and real moss to inspire the feeling of being at one with nature. In The Water Area, visitors stroll barefoot through water, in which swims digital koi carp. In The Infinite Crystal Universe, visitors can use a smartphone app to change the colour and appearance of what looks like an endless series of lights – designed to echo outer space.
Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center
For students of geography, the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center provides a range of brilliant educational activities in Tokyo, where students can get to grips with the realities of tectonic activity in Japan. Students can take a tour around the centre, which features VR experiences, and test their mettle in the Earthquake Hall, a room that provides an entire simulated experience of a real earthquake. In addition to this, students also get to try out a smoke simulator and first aid training, as well as learning all about Japan’s own preventative strategies, giving them a glimpse into the real-life consequences of living in a country with earthquake activity.
The JAL Sky Museum
A centre run by Japan Airlines, the JAL Sky Museum is an incredible facility which gives visitors a history of the airline, the aviation sector, and flight technology in all its glory. First, visitors move through the museum, which is filled with artifacts that document the rise and development of Japan Airlines and the commercial air travel sector.
Next, the tour takes students on an amazing tour of the hangars. Students will learn the nuts and bolts of air travel from a specialist tour guide, and they’ll have the opportunity to get around the aircrafts themselves. But this is no ordinary tour! The hangar is still working today, meaning that as students are guided around, they’ll be able to see mechanics carrying out real inspections on aircraft still in use today.
Miraikan
For lovers of science, Miraikan – the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation – is a must visit. Designed to promote the future of science in society, the museum is full of incredible exhibitions and hands-on experiences that will enthrall even the most reluctant of learners, making it one of the best educational activities in Tokyo.
Split into three sections, Miraikan explores the human relationship to science, nature and technology. In the Discover Your Earth exhibition, the students can examine a 3D LED globe that projects real-time images from weather satellites. In the Explore the Frontiers section, the museum provides an overview of all things space and time, including an exhibition on natural disasters and a mock-up of the living quarters on board the International Space Station.
Then, finally, the Create Your Future exhibit is home to all things robot, as it asks questions like “What does it mean to be human?” In here, visitors can get up close and personal with robots like ASIMO from Honda, or the incredible android Otonaroid.

Cyberdyne
Embark on an exploration of global technology with a visit to Cyberdyne, a robotics and technology company, to discover how advanced tech is being used to improve life. The company is famous for its HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) suit, which assists victims of traumatic spinal injuries by augmenting their body movements and increasing the wearer’s strength by up to ten times. Students take a guided tour, test out HAL technology, and are given an opportunity to see how the research of futures technology comes to life.
