Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

  • Students will touch down in Xiamen, ready for the start of their culture trip! They’ll meet their Adventure Leader and they will have a trip briefing. Alongside running through the next 5 days of the itinerary, they’ll also introduce students to the local culture and provide some tips for adjusting to local life, while also explaining the best ways to stay safe while they travel.
  • Students will then hop on a private coach, for a stunning ride through the countryside to arrive at Haka Taxa Village. Students will be staying in a square tulou, a earthen defensive castle like structure with an open courtyard in the middle.
  • Once settled in, students can delight in the art of crafting rice dumplings by participating in a captivating rice dumpling making class. They will learn the intricacies of preparing these delectable treats, as they master the techniques and fillings that make them truly special.

Day 2: Village Visits, Agricultural Tasks & Tea Tasting

  • For their first morning, students will explore the mountains where the Hakka people live in “Tulous” scattered across the landscape. They’ll visit the Huang Family village, one of the most famous in the region, to appreciate the unique architecture, talk to the local people, enjoy their food, visit their ancestral temples and better understand daily life in the region.
  • Students will then help the farmers with some agricultural tasks, and then sit down for a farm to table meal experience in the farmhouse.
  • To end their day, students will enjoy a captivating local tea tasting session to indulge in the diverse flavors and aromas of the region’s finest teas. They’ll immerse themselves in the rich traditions and rituals surrounding tea as they sample a variety of blends, each offering a unique sensory experience.

Day 3: Tea Plantation, Bamboo Weaving & Trivia

  • Today, students will visit a tea plantation workshop, this offers the opportunity to learn about the region’s tea culture and production methods. Students can explore the plantations, help the local community to pick tea leaves in busy times, and participate in tea-tasting sessions to sample different varieties of tea.
  • After lunch, students will join a bamboo weaving class where they’ll learn more about the local crafts of this unique area of China.
  • It’s time for a quiz! Students will group into teams and test their knowledge in our TLA Trivia Night.

Day 4: School Visit & Rice Paddies

  • Students will get to visit a Chinese school this morning, specifically matched to meet their educational interests. Typically, students will take a school tour, join some lessons, play sports, eat lunch and participate in other activities alongside Chinese students (such as teaching local students English).
  • After a morning with the school, students will take a stroll through the picturesque rice paddies, in the nearby mountains of Tulou.
  • To end the trip. students will come together for a banquet dinner. The banquet typically features a variety of delicious dishes representing the local cuisine or a special menu prepared for the occasion.
  • It’s a time to reflect on the experiences of the trip, bond with classmates and educators, and create lasting memories before heading back home.

Day 5: Farewell

  • Hop on a bus from the Tulou area and enjoy a scenic journey back to Xiamen.
  • Gather for a chance for students, faculty and adventure leaders to come together for a reflection session. Through discussion, listening and guided thought, participants can process their experiences, digest new ideas and consider what they have learned during the program.
