Day 1: Hello, Hohhot!

Morning

Arrive and transfer into the Inner Mongolia’s capital, Hohhot. First off, visit the Dazhao Temple, the oldest building and largest temple in the city. After the Silver Buddha statue was dedicated to the temple by the third Tibetan Dalai Lama in 1586, Hohhot became a religious centre for people all over Mongolia. The design of the temple is unique as it blends traditionally Mongolian elements with Buddhist symbolism. (Ask our specialists about our Dazhao Temple worksheet).

Afternoon

Spend time at the local artisan street in the area and enjoy browsing the handicrafts, tchotchkes, skins and furs that are traditionally sold in this area of the city. Next, we drive over the mountains that demarcate the beginning of the grasslands.

Evening

Finish your first day with an authentic Mongolian feast and some traditional welcoming ceremonies.

Day 2: Life on the Grassy Steppes

Morning

Breakfast the local way with milk tea and a simple meal of traditional porridge and vegetables. But don’t worry – cereal’s available too! Now you’re ready for the day, take a short walking tour of the surrounding grasslands. You’ll learn how to differentiate between different grasses and plants on the grasslands. After stopping for some photos, take a short pony or pony carriage tour (dependent on season) to a local oboo. It’s a Mongolian holy place and gathering spot.

Afternoon

Fly kites under the blue skies on the open grasslands.

Evening

Huddle around the campfire and tell stories together.

Day 3: In the Desert

Morning

28% of China is covered in desert and today’s the chance to experience it. On the way, pass the ghost town of Ordos. You can even walk around for photos in the ghost town, as well as learn about housing bubbles and the economic situation that led to it.

Afternoon

Enter the desert site. After a safety briefing, choose between a whole host of exhilarating activities, from sand sledging to ATV ridescamel rides to zip lines.

Optional: Participate in a workshop about desertification in China and the steps being taken to reclaim arid land.

Day 4: The Great Khan

Morning

Travel back in time as you visit the Genghis Khan memorial – the real tomb of Genghis Khan himself is yet to be discovered. Here, you’ll uncover original shrines, weapons, jewellery and clothing from the reign of Genghis Khan. Take a look at the actual bow and saddle of the conqueror and discuss how his political legacy – and thousands of descendants – directly influenced the development of China. Discuss how the Yuan dynasty contributed to China’s current religious and trade landscapes.

Afternoon

Transfer back to Hohhot and recap all the history you learned this morning on the way.

Evening

Feast on a hearty dinner and watch an evening show that showcases elements of Mongolian culture.

Day 5: Milk and Migration

Morning

Start with a visit to the Yili milk products factory, one of Inner Mongolia’s largest industries. Discover how milk is processed, packaged and distributed to the nation. Head for the Inner Mongolia Museum, which is home to fascinating cultural artefacts and a significant dinosaur exhibition. Inner Mongolia’s has been the excavation site for many fossil zones and nests!

Evening

Stop by the Islamic district in Hohhot, inhabited by Hui Muslims who migrated to this region during the Qing Dynasty. Admire the Turkic and Central Asian architecture in and around the Grand Mosque. Then, it’s home time – transfer to the airport and reflect on your magical week.
