Day 1: Longji Rice Terraces
Step off the plane at Guilin airport and hop on a 2-hour coach transfer to Longsheng County, a great base to learn about Chinese agriculture.
Marvel at the scenic Longji rice terraces at Ping’an village.
Spend the night in a cozy accommodation built amongst the terraces.
Day 2: Hike to Meet Minority Tribes
Hike through rice paddies and meet minority tribes. Challenge yourself to reach viewing points, like “7 stars and 1 moon” and “9 dragons and 5 tigers” for the most Instagrammable snaps.
Rest up on your 3-hour transfer to Yangshuo.
Once you arrive, spend the rest of your day making dinner at an authentic Chinese cooking class.
Day 3: Karst Scenery Bike Ride
Explore the countryside on bikes, stopping off at limestone peaks as you cycle alongside Yulong River. Then, admire the stunning karst scenery on bamboo rafts. But don’t worry – this has been fully risk assessed and it’s much gentler than white-water rafting!
Give your muscles some well-earned TLC as you relax in the mud baths and hot springs at the back of a 2km deep cave. Refreshed, hike to the top of Moon Hill, a famous natural landmark, and take some mental snapshots of the incredible view over Yangshuo.
Spend the evening shopping in West Street in Yangshuo.
Day 4: Local Geography Experts
Research and discuss challenges facing rural China, as well as the effects of tourism on a LEDC, with local experts.
Try your hand at local farming and help out a local village community. Yangshuo is implementing organic farming, and this is your chance to be a part of the difference.
Relax after a hard day with a traditional Chinese cupping or foot massage.
Day 5: School Visit
Make lifelong friends at a local Chinese school, specially matched to meet your school’s curriculum and students’ educational interests. Typically, you’ll take a school tour, join in with some lessons, play sports and eat lunch. If you want to be popular, prepare gifts and a performance for the welcome ceremony in advance.
You’ve had a fun day – so don’t break the streak! Enjoy a Chinese-style KTV night.
Day 6: Rock Climbing & Fan Painting
Get your game face on. This morning, you’ll be rock climbing on Yangshou’s karst peaks. This activity has been fully risk-assessed, and you’ll have an instructor and safety gear, so enjoy the thrill of climbing one of the world’s most famous rock-climbing sites.
Test your skills at a kung fu lesson in the park. Then, get crafty as you make your own souvenir in a Chinese fan painting class. Use calligraphy and the beautiful landscapes you’ve seen this week as inspiration.
Watch the amazing evening show, Impression Sanjie Liu. It’s hard to describe – you’ve got to see it with your own eyes! The Li River is the backdrop and the show’s a dazzling mix of moonlight, natural sounds and night lights.
Day 7: Home Time
It might be home time, but it’s not over. China’s culture and geography will follow you back to the classroom…and beyond!
Creative: fan painting
