Day 1: Tokyo

  • Your Japan geography school trip starts today! You’ll touch down in Tokyo and be greeted at the airport by your Adventure Leader, who’ll help you transfer to your accommodation. After checking in and settling, you’ll rejoin them for a trip briefing. Here, your guide will explain the week’s itinerary, give you cultural advice, and tips on staying safe.
  • In the evening, you’ll get your first real glimpse of the Tokyo skyline. Get up in the clouds atop the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, before heading back to the hotel.

Day 2: Tokyo

  • Gain a deeper appreciation for the crucial work of firefighters and emergency responders at the Honjo Life Safety Learning Center. Experience immersive exhibits and educational programs that highlight fire safety, disaster prevention, and emergency response.
  • Visit the beautiful Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and his wife. Then, move on to the Harujuku district, Tokyo’s cultural epicentre, to see pokemon, punks, goths and fashionistas. Anything goes in Harajuku!
  • After dinner, pay a visit to the famous Shibuya Crossing. When the lights turn red at this busy intersection, pedestrians surge into the junction from all sides like a floodgate opening. It’s arguably one of the most iconic modern sights in Tokyo!

Day 3: Fukushima

  • In the morning, transfer to Fukushima. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenic views of the Japanese countryside.
  • Once you’ve arrived, visit the town of Futaba in Fukushima, where you will get a unique chance to interact and learn from the strong community in Futaba. This project shows the effects of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster and how they have recovered since 2011.
  • Activities include, an educational walking tour of the area, visiting The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum, a workshop with survivors of the tragedy and visiting the ruins of an elementary school damaged by the disaster. *All money for this project goes directly to local citizens and the local area*

Day 4: Kesennuma

  • Today, you will continue learning about the 2011 disaster in the historic town of Futaba.
  • In the afternoon, get ready to go to your next destination! Kesennuma.

Day 5: Kesennuma

  • Enjoy a day in Kesennuma, a place once affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. See how the  industry continues to thrive in the area and visit some of the local industries. Enjoy a possible visit to Kesennuma Port, for oysters and scallops, or if you are lucky you may get the chance to accompany workers out on boats to help harvest and process their catch. (Boats may not be possible as it’s weather and season dependent)
  • In the evening, discuss with your peers, teachers and adventure leader what you have learnt so far on your transformative travel experience! Make sure to take down some notes about your favourite learning moment before you forget!

Day 6: Kesennuma & Tokyo

  • On your last full day in Japan, learn about what happened on the afternoon of the 2011 due to the earthquake and tsunami, and how the town has rebuilt after the accident.
  • Travel between Kesennuma and Tokyo. Take in the sights of the Japanese countryside as you travel on a bullet train to the South of the country.
  • On the last evening in Japan, there will be a chance for students, faculty and adventure leaders to come together for a reflection session. Through discussion, listening and guided thought, participants can process their experiences, digest new ideas and consider what they have learned about the region, its people and themselves during the trip.

Day 7: Farewell

Sadly, today marks the end of your Japan geography school trip – you’ll transfer back to the airport, ready to head home.
