Culture School Trip to Boston & New York

Once you’re breakfasted, students will be out on the high seas as they head whale-watching! Climb on board a boat and head off the coast of Cape Cod to see these magnificent sea beasts feeding.  

This afternoon, you’re heading on a walking tour along the historic Freedom Trail, passing revolutionary landmarks as you go. You’ll stop at the Boston Common, Park Street Church, and Granary Burying Ground, learning all about the key sites in the city’s history.  

After dinner it’s time for an amazing opportunity, as students get the chance to tour Fenway Park – home of the Boston Red Sox!

This morning, we’re taking you to a spot that’s a firm favourite of TLA staff members the world over: the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This museum houses some significant examples of European, Asian and American art, and was also the site of one of the biggest art heists in history!  

Then, once we’ve had lunch, you’ll be heading to the Harvard Art Museums, which are Harvard’s oldest museums. Here, you’ll be able to see even more amazing examples of European and American art, all the way from the Middle Ages to the present day.  

This evening, get your dessert from Boston’s old Italian neighbourhood, North End. Make sure you pick up a cannoli from Mike’s, the legendary pastry shop!  

The second leg of your culture school trip to America kicks off today, because you’re boarding a train that’s bound for New York City!  

Once you’ve arrived, we’ll head straight to the World Trade Center. Students will learn about how New York has built back stronger following the 9/11 terror attacks, with a trip to the One World Observatory that’s perched atop the Freedom Tower. Then, we’ll head to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum next door, where students will gain a reflective and sobering understanding of this dark moment in American history.  

This evening, you’ll get an amazing view of the world-famous Manhattan skyline when you take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. You’ll stop for a slice of pizza at Gemaldi’s – our favourite joint in town! Then, we’ll explore a little more of Dumbo (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) on foot before we head back into the city centre.

This morning, once your breakfast has gone down we’re taking you on a high-octane morning adventure. You’ll board a jetboat, aptly named The Beast, for an exciting boat journey unlike any other as we head out to view the Statue of Liberty.  

Then, after lunch, we’ll be getting to grips with America’s civil rights history with a walking tour through Harlem. We’ll meet an expert guide, born-and-raised in the area, who’ll show us around the culturally important district. Students will learn all about the lives of key players such as Malcolm X, Dr. Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr, and Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.  

Students are up bright and early this morning, ready for a trip to ‘Fi-Di’ – New York’s Financial District. They’ll be heading to Wall Street for a walking tour, so be sure to stop and get a photo with the statue of the charging bull!  

Following lunch, it’s off to another one of the TLA team’s America highlights – the Metropolitan Museum of Art, known to many worldwide simply as the MET. Students will have a packed afternoon as they explore the huge institute’s exhibitions, which feature over two million fascinating works!  

It’s your final dinner in America this evening, so afterwards your group will come together for a reflection session. Students will be able to process their amazing new experiences, digesting what they’ve learned over the last week.  

Sadly, today marks the end of your culture school trip to America. However, you’ll be returning home with the most important luggage of all – the memories of your incredible learning adventure!
