Must-See Sites in Seoul On An Educational Tour

Tom Moorhouse

Seoul, South Korea’s vibrant capital, is a city rich in culture and history. From iconic historical landmarks to immersive cultural experiences, the city provides a perfect setting for fostering global awareness and a deeper academic understanding. This guide highlights some of the must-visit sites in Seoul that promise to engage and inspire students, making their learning adventure unforgettable.

Gyeongbokgung Palace

One of five grand palaces peppered throughout the city, Gyeongbokgung Palace was once the seat of the Josean dynasty: rulers of Korea for over 5 centuries. Undoubtedly one of South Korea’s most significant historical sites, the site was severely damaged during the Japanese occupation of Korea and Gyeongbokgung Palace remains in the process of restoration.

Students will have the chance to tour the palace grounds (which include the National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum) and witness the changing of the guard, which takes place at the main gate. You can expect a guided tour to take between 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Cheong Wa Dae

Also known as the Blue House, Cheong Wa Dae served as the former Presidential Palace from 1948. However, it opened as a public park in 2022, soon becoming a popular tourist attraction. The main building features the President’s office, reception and conference rooms. In some of the rooms, the walls are lined with portraits of previous Presidents and local South Korean art. Alongside the Blue House, the complex is home to 9 other buildings and a tour of the Cheong Wa Dae grounds typically lasts for around 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Seoul Upcycling Plaza

Home to South Korea’s largest upcycling complex, the Seoul Upcycling Plaza is dedicated to promoting sustainability and environmental awareness through innovation and creativity. Students can learn about waste reduction, engage in hands-on workshops, and explore exhibitions focused on environmental awareness.

Fun fact: the exterior is designed to look like discarded boxes!

Cheonggyecheon Stream

A peaceful escape amidst Seoul’s urban landscape, Cheonggyecheon Stream meanders through the heart of the city. Once hidden by a 10-lane highway, as part of South Korea’s commitment to urban renewal, the highway was removed and the stream restored to its former glory. Now home to an array of wildlife, art exhibitions, and cultural events, every Friday and Saturday during Spring and Autumn, Cheonggyecheon stream is transformed into an outdoor library. Benches line the water’s edge and members of the public are invited to read books and take part in cultural activities. In winter, the Stream hosts the Seoul Lantern Festival; a light festival displaying hundreds of LED lights and lanterns made of traditional Korean paper. It’s a perfect spot for students to experience the unique blend of nature and urbanisation.

Myeongdong

One of Seoul’s busiest and most vibrant neighbourhoods, Myeongdong is renowned for its bustling shopping streets and delicious street food. Students will find everything from well known, international stores, Korean inspired skincare and all the food you can imagine. Students can sample local delicacies such as Tteok (Korean rice cakes), served sweet, savoury, or spicy.

With its bright lights and bustling atmosphere, Myeongdong resembles New York’s Times Square but with its distinctive Korean charm.

So, whether you’re interested in history, sustainability, or modern culture, Seoul provides a rich array of educational experiences.
