Japan is a country with a rich history, dynamic culture and beautiful landscape, so different to the Western world. There are countless ways that school trips to Japan can develop Australian students’ academic and personal skills.
1) Make friends, make memories, make a difference
It’s so beneficial to meet people from different cultures, to see how others have lived and understand how they think. Students could be volunteering at a local farm, then cooking dinner for the farmers. Or volunteer at Seiryoin, a Soto Buddhist temple, which opened its doors to evacuees following the tragic tsunami. Pupils could also be spending a day in a local school, taking part in lessons and making friends for life.
2) Discover the real-life biological world
Take biology out of the classroom and inspire your students. Show them what a career in science could be. Go on an entomology tour of Chino and carry out a plant reproduction and growth experiment.
3) Business & tech in action
Japan is at the forefront of business and technology. See what the best of the best are doing. Learn about aerospace plans at the Tsukuba Space Center and discover the most cutting-edge technology at Sony Explora Science. Visit the Tokyo Stock Exchange Market, listen to a lecture and get competitive in the stock trading game.
4) See art’s other side
Japan’s art is unique and there’s so much to learn from its ancient influences. Japanese art has also had a huge influence on Western art. Take part in a calligraphy lesson, then head for the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.
