Korea has a rich history of music, dance and theatre. Especially in the last 30 years, their theatre scene is taking the main stage. The culture of performing arts is held in very high regard, with incredible arts and theatre schools throughout the country. Through our school trips your students can experience and embrace this element of South Korea and make special connections in the industry. Here’s a rundown on our favourite performing arts activities in South Korea:
Watch a Performance of Nanta
watch a hugely popular show called Nanta, a non-verbal comedy show, involving acrobatics, magic and of course a dose of audience participation.
Nanta combines rhythms from Korean folk music with modern musical forms to create an experience very unique but familiar to international audiences. It is a brilliant experience, one where your students will become part of the show!
Join a Local High-School and put on a Production
Your students will have the chance to make friends with pupils from a local high school, Spend the day rehearsing a number of arrangements and play icebreaker games. Once they’ve bonded and prepared, they will hold a joint musical performance at the end of the day.
This is a brilliant opportunity for students to embrace a new culture and new theatre, and learn from fellow performing arts students!
Watch a Pansori Perfomance
Prepare for your students to be captivated by watching a performance of Pansori, a traditional genre of Korean musical storytelling with singing and drumming. ‘Chuimsae’ (audience participation) is a must, so don’t be shy! Clap and dance to show your appreciation.
It is invaluable for students to embrace a different culture’s music and theatre, to inspire their own future creations. Pansori is sure to stick in their mind!
Watch a Taekwondo Perfomance
Head to Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters to watch a demonstration of ‘the way of the foot and the fist’ (the literal translation of ‘taekwondo’), a martial art that originated in Korea.
Taekwondo is a truly mesmerising art to watch and will be sure to inspire. The various elegant movements combined with the strength and fierceness of the sport, makes this a once-in-a-lifetime activity!
