We take our students to a diverse range of locations on our politics and law school trips in London. Here’s a list of politics and law fun facts to get your travel buds going (we’re kind of experts on educational trip inspiration). Share them with your students on the way to London!
1) Palace of Westminster (House of Lords and House of Commons)
Most Lords belong to a political party, but there are almost 200 who don’t and are known as “crossbenchers”. They get that name because they traditionally sit on the cross benches, between the government and opposition benches.
2) Tour the Supreme Court
Forget your assumptions when you hear “Supreme Court”. The UK’s Supreme Court is so different to the USA’s Supreme Court. For example, The Supreme Court of the United States was founded in 1789. The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was founded in just 2009! Also, UK Supreme Court judges have to retire by 75. In the US, justices have a life-long job.
3) London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)
There are some pretty historic people who went to LSE. We’re talking the likes of John F. Kennedy and Mick Jagger!
4) Explore vibrant street art
Head over to Shoreditch for some incredible street art. A community of artists used to call Shoreditch their home, but, due to gentrification, it became too expensive for many of them. Admire an artist called Stik’s quirky street artwork called ‘Past, Present and Future’. It’s a commentary on these changes in Shoreditch. The first stick man on the left looks longingly at Old Street, where the community of artists used to live. The central one looks at the billboards below, a symbol of how the area is changing and attracting people with more money. The one on the right thinks about the area’s uncertain future, looking upwards towards future skyscrapers. Shoreditch is full of political statements like this.
