Day 1: Arrival

  • Students will touch down in Zhangjiajie, ready for the start of their culture trip! They’ll meet their Adventure Leader and they’ll help them transfer to their accommodation.
  • After arriving, students will have a trip briefing with the Adventure Leader. Alongside running through the next 5 days of the itinerary, they’ll also introduce students to the local culture and provide some tips for adjusting to local life, while also explaining the best ways to stay safe while they travel.
  • Once students have settled in, students will get to visit a traditional tea house. Students will engage with knowledgeable tea experts who will guide them through the intricate process of making tea in the traditional way, sharing insights into brewing techniques, tea ceremonies, and the art of appreciating different tea varieties.

Day 2: Tianzi Mountain

  • For their first full day, students will spend the day exploring the Wulingyuan Scenic Area by cable car and hiking as they visit Tianzi Mountain the morning and Yuanjianjie in the afternoon. They will also get the opportunity to see the Hallelujah Mountain and various filming locations from the movie Avatar.
  • After fueling up from lunch, take a cable car to Hallelujah Mountain & Geological museum.
  • To end the day, students will group into teams and test their knowledge in our TLA Trivia Night.

Day 3: Cable Car, Sandstone Painting & Tianmen Fox Fairy Show

  • In the morning, students will head into the center of Zhangjiajie and take the world’s longest cable car 7.5 km to the peak of Tianmen Mountain, where they’ll take some heart stopping steps along the glass walk, which line the cliffs.
  • Students will then have the chance to participate in a sandstone painting workshop where they will learn this local craft from an experienced expert. The final product is a lovely souvenir to take home.
  • They will then head back into the town center to watch a stunning performance of the Tianmen Fox Fairy Show, set on a stage carved out of the mountain.

Day 4: Yellow Dragon Cave & Crafts

  • Spend the morning exploring the Yellow Dragon Cave, one of the world’s largest, which hosts an incredible array of stalactites and stalagmites.
  • In the afternoon, students will have the opportunity to make their own small brocade sachet, with help from a local expert. The Tujia People are known for their skill in a variety of crafts including stone carving, embroidery, paper-cutting and textile printing, but they are most famous for their Xilankapu Brocade, which is a combination of weaving and embroidery.

Day 5: Farewell

  • Gather for a chance for students, faculty and adventure leaders to come together for a reflection session. Through discussion, listening and guided thought, participants can process their experiences, digest new ideas and consider what they have learned during the program.
  • Sadly, today marks the end of your Learning Adventure to Zhangjiajie.
