Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

  • Students will touch down in Chengdu, ready for the start of their culture and service trip! They’ll meet their Adventure Leader and they’ll help them transfer to their accommodation.
  • After arriving, students will have a trip briefing with the Adventure Leader. Alongside running through the next 5 days of the itinerary, they’ll also introduce students to the local culture and provide some tips for adjusting to local life, while also explaining the best ways to stay safe while they travel.
  • Once students have settled in, they will visit one of Chengdu’s charming pedestrian streets that dates back to the Qing Dynasty. They will explore narrow alleyways lined with traditional architecture and browse shops selling local handicrafts and street food.
  • In the evening, students will get that chance to visit a traditional teahouse to learn the art of making opera face masks. From this, students will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into Sichuan opera culture, see Sichuan Opera and the famous face-changing act.

Day 2: Cooking Class & Echo Farm

  • Today, students will get to enjoy a cooking class with a local chef, set within the beautiful Sichuan Food Museum. They will immerse themselves in the rich culinary heritage of Chengdu as they discover the secrets behind some of the most famous Sichuan dishes.
  • After cooking local food, students will explore an eco farm nestled near the enchanting city of Chengdu. They will experience sustainable agriculture practices, get hands-on with organic farming techniques, encounter local wildlife, and learn about the delicate balance between nature and humans, all while forging a deep connection with the environment and gaining a profound appreciation for the wonders of rural life.

Day 3: Panda Center

  • In the morning, students will visit the Dujiangyan Panda Center, where they will participant in the Panda Service Project and learn about the conservation project. Depending on the season and visiting time students could take up tasks like preparing fresh bamboo, cleaning up sites, and making the panda cakes.
  • After helping at Dujiangyan Panda Center, students will visit one of the Sichuan ancient towns with a history of over 1000 years. They’ll explore the traditional architectures and browse shops selling local handicrafts and street food.
  • To end the day, students will try Sichuan’s most renowned and traditional dish – Hotpot. A must-try experience for foodies. This spicy and flavourful dish is a Sichuanese specialty, featuring a bubbling pot of soup in which diners cook a variety of meats, vegetables, and other ingredients.

Day 4: Hiking & Kung Fu Lesson

  • For the last full day, students will enjoy a hike to Qingcheng Mountain, one of the four famous Taoism mountains and also one of the birthplaces of Taoism in China. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and walking, so students will likely encounter other people while exploring.
  • They will then participate in a Kung Fu lesson taught by a Shifu (Master). A Kungfu lesson offers the chance to learn the basics of this iconic Chinese martial art from experienced teachers.
  • To end their final evening, students will enjoy Chengdu chuan chuan, a similar meal to hot pot where you select baskets of skewers to eat.

Day 5: Farewell

  • On the final morning, everyone will come together for a reflection session. Through discussion, listening and guided thought, participants can process their experiences, digest new ideas and consider what they have learned during the program.
  • Sadly, today marks the end of your Learning Adventure to Chengdu. We’ll transfer back to the airport, ready for you to head home.
