Here students will deep dive into themes around space and the latest sciences with meeting a real astronaut, as well as meeting with robotic experts & professionals. Students will gain firsthand experience in designing and building rockets, their own space rover as well as learning about harsh environment and as to how we could potentially tackle these challenges to further our space exploration.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch

  • Arrive in Christchurch and be met by your enthusiastic Adventure Leader. After a trip and safety briefing, you’ll head to your accommodation where students will be sleeping in ‘space’ pods! 
  • Set off for the Air Force Museum and start you camp experience with a fitting for your individual space suits! Don’t worry, there’s plenty of time for photos before the orientation talk and immersive presentation.  
  •  Spend the afternoon learning about aerodynamics and then get involved by designing, building, and testing an Orion parachute
  • Finish the day with aquanautical training where students will experience neutral buoyancy. 

Day 2: Aerospace technology

  • Start the day by learning about the history of aerospace technology and hear examples of New Zealand based aerospace companies that are developing new technologies. Based at the Airforce Museum, students will also have the opportunity to get inside a range of aircraft from throughout history. 
  • After lunch students learn about the development of rockets specifically and the role that New Zealand companies like Rocket Lab play in launching satellites into orbit! They will then have a go themselves and design, build and test a rocket of their own (weather permitting)!  

Day 3: Astronaut Q&A and Hägglund ride

  • Every wondered what its like to go up into space? Today’s adventure starts with a Q&A session with an astronaut, where students will learn from firsthand experiences.  
  • Time to get the adrenaline pumping as you buckle up for a unique Antarctic experience on the Hägglund ride at the International Antarctic Centre.  
  • It’s time for some experiential astronaut training in the Storm Dome! You’ll get an up close experience of an Antarctic storm as well as getting to meet huskies. 
  • You’ll also get the opportunity to learn about how the international Space station recycles there water with an exciting 4D experience at the International Antarctic Centre. 
  • Enjoy a session of ‘Mission to the moon’. Here you will be tasked with designing and building a moon habitat, which will be judged by the engineering principles.

Day 4: NASA’s Mission to Mars and the astronomy centre

  • Learn all about NASA’s Mission to Mars, it’s history and important milestones so far. You will then design and construct a Mars Rover, before taking it to the specialist testing area.
  • In the afternoon, students will visit either Adrenaline Park for a stimulated moonwalk, or Adventure Park for an exhilarating zipline activity. Both develop their teamwork skills and offer a fun-filled end to their camp experience.
  • At night its time to visit the astronomy centre. Here you can use a telescope to see and explore the stars in the Southern Skies. 

Day 5: Local school visit and farewell

  • In the morning, explore and develop your STEM knowledge and career pathways in aerospace with a local industry visit. Afterwards, you’ll get the opportunity to meet with a local school who are studying science and aerospace. 
  • In the afternoon it’s graduation time and then departure.
