Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch

  • Arrive in Christchurch and be met by your enthusiastic Adventure Leader. After a trip and safety briefing, you’ll head to your accommodation where students will be sleeping in ‘space’ pods!
  • Set off for the Air Force Museum and start you camp experience with a fitting for your individual space suits! Don’t worry, there’s plenty of time for photos before the orientation talk and immersive presentation.
  •  Spend the afternoon learning about aerodynamics and then get involved by designing, building, and testing an Orion parachute. Next up is a visit inside a real search and rescue aircraft to understand more about the real-life implications of the science.
  • Finish the day with aquanautical training where students will experience neutral buoyancy.

Day 2: Aerospace technology

  • Start the day by learning about the history of aerospace technology and hear examples of New Zealand based aerospace companies that are developing new technologies. Based at the Airforce Museum, students will also have the opportunity to get inside a range of aircraft from throughout history.
  • After lunch students learn about the development of rockets specifically and the role that New Zealand companies like Rocket Lab play in launching satellites into orbit! They will then have a go themselves and design, build and test a rocket of their own (weather permitting)!
  • To round off the day, students will hear a presentation from a guest speaker to develop their STEAM knowledge and understanding of career pathways in Aerospace technologies.

Day 3: NASA’s Mission to Mars & farewell

  • During the final morning of camp, students will learn about NASA’s Mission to Mars, it’s history and important milestones so far. They will then design and construct a Mars Rover, before taking it to the specialist testing area.
  • The second half of the morning will include a talk from a Robotics guest speaker, who will also act as a judge for the robots and finally a Bee Bot Challenge.
  • In the afternoon, students will visit either Adrenaline Park for a stimulated moonwalk, or Adventure Park for an exhilarating zipline activity. Both develop their teamwork skills and offer a fun-filled end to their camp experience.
  • Round off camp with a graduation celebration to mark your accomplishments from the past three days.
