Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Medan

  • Arrive in Medan and be greeted by your enthusiastic Adventure Leader, who will welcome you with open arms and a friendly wave of the TLA flag.
  • Participate in a trip briefing where you’ll learn about the day’s plans, cultural norms, and safety guidelines. This session will give you with all the information needed to make the most of your journey and adapt smoothly to the local environment.
  • Explore Medan’s historical and cultural landmarks on an engaging city tour. Visit Merdeka Square, the Town Hall, and learn about the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Grand Mosque, an architectural marvel and a focal point of local culture.
  • Enjoy your first dinner that will introduce you to the flavours of Indonesian cuisine. This meal will give you a taste of local dishes and give you a relaxing end to your first day.

 

 

Day 2: Tjong A Fie Mansion and Bukit Lawang

  • Start your day with a visit to the historic Tjong A Fie Mansion, a cultural heritage site and museum. Learn about its historical significance and the life of its prominent former owner, immersing yourself in the cultural heritage of Medan.
  • After lunch, transfer to Bukit Lawang, where your service-learning project will take place. Enjoy the picturesque landscapes and local scenery along the way.

Day 3: Recycling village and Ecobrick workshop

  • It’s time to explore the innovative Recycling Village. Learn about the unique recycling methods and sustainable building practices used in the area.
  • Get involved with a rewarding cleanup activity in the surrounding area. Collect waste and deliver it to the Trashbank for sorting and processing. Here you can experience hands-on recycling by using a special plastic machine to transform old plastic into new products such as key rings, coasters, and soap tins. You’ll learn about the benefits of recycling and, to remember it all, take home your new product as a souvenir!
  • In the evening, take part in an Ecobrick workshop where you’ll learn how to craft solid building materials from recycled plastic and have the opportunity to make your own.

Day 4: Gunung Leuser National Park

  • Set out early with experienced rangers on a guided tour through the buffer zone of Gunung Leuser National Park, to learn about the critical conservation work being done and the importance of protecting this vital ecosystem.
  • You will be introduced to the basics of wildlife tracking and trap detection so that you can assist the rangers in their mission. With modern equipment and a deep understanding of wildlife, you will embark together on an exciting search for clues and hidden traps.

Day 5: Tree Planting and Agricultural Learning

  • Join in a meaningful tree planting activity aimed at supporting reforestation efforts. Learn the techniques for planting seedlings and understand their role in enhancing local ecosystems.
  • Deepen your knowledge by exploring the variety of exotic plants, spices, and herbs cultivated in the area. Learn about their uses and significance in local culture, gaining insights into traditional agricultural practices.
  • Depending on the season, you’ll get the opportunity to participate in activities such as planting, harvesting, or caring for crops. This hands-on experience provides a practical understanding of agricultural life and sustainability.

Day 6: Lake Toba and Samosir Island Tour

  • Enjoy a day trip to Lake Toba, beginning with a stop in Pematang Siantar for souvenir shopping.
  • Cross the beautiful lake by ferry, taking in the serene landscape and clear waters and arrive on Samosir Island, where you can visit Tomok Traditional Village. Discover traditional Batak houses, see the Sigale Gale puppets, and explore the historic Tomb of the Sidabutar Kings.
  • After a day of exploration, return to Medan in the evening.

Day 7: Farewell

Sadly, today marks the end of your service school trip to Indonesia. Transfer back to the airport, ready to head home!
