Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Rome

Your Italy Classics school trip starts today! Step off the plane at Ciampino/Fiumicino airport and take a private coach to your accommodation. Check into the hotel, unpack and prepare for the exciting world of classical civilisation.

Head straight out into the eternal city and enjoy a walking tour of some of the most famous sites the city has to offer. See the Spanish Steps, Borghese Gardens, marvel at the Pantheon and throw your coin into the Trevi Fountain.

Amble through Rome’s streets to the Piazza Navona, once a chariot racing track! Enjoy a well-earned meal and gelato!

Day 2: Rome

Head into the centre of the ancient city, the Roman Forum! Wander through the ancient buildings that made up the political centre of Rome and then head up to the Palatine Hill, and marvel at the scale of these imperial palaces.

From palaces to prisoners, its time for the Colosseum! Walk in the footsteps of Roman spectators and explore this amazing monument to Roman public life. It’s even possible to walk out onto the arena floor and stand in the place of prisoners and gladiators alike!

Spend the evening walking along the River Tiber, exploring neighbourhoods like Trastevere. Enjoy dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 3: Rome

It’s time to head to the monumental Baths of Diocletian. Explore the remains of this vast bath house, capable of housing 3,000 bathers! Then head down to the Capitoline Museum, home to some of the great masterpieces of Roman sculpture.

You’ve seen what it’s like to be in the crowd, now live like a gladiator. Learn sword techniques, archery and javelin, at your very own Gladiator School workshop and experience the thrill of Ancient Rome.

You’ve had a full-on day, so treat yourself to dinner in a local Italian restaurant.

Day 4: Naples

Hop on the train down to Naples, and settle into your second hotel.

Time to wander through the galleries of the National Archaeological Museum. Don’t miss the Pompeii galleries to see some of the fantastic artifacts that survived the eruption of Vesuvius!

You’re in the home of pizza, so it’s only right to spend the evening at a pizza making course! Perfect the art of the pizza toss and enjoy the fruits of your labours.

Day 5: Pompeii and Herculaneum

It’s time to step back to 76CE and into the streets of Pompeii! Hop onto a local train down to the famous archaeological site. Amble around the forum, head to the baths, and even take a peak at some of the lavishly decorated villas! Make sure to take in the smaller details as well; water fountains, ancient fast food restaurants, and even stepping stones to avoid sewage (the Romans really thought of everything)!

Take the train to the nearby town of Herculaneum, also destroyed by Vesuvius and with some equally fascinating remains. See the charred furniture of a second floor room, and even the remains of people hiding by the ancient beach in an attempt to flee the ash. This site really brings the realities of the eruption to life.

Head back to Naples and enjoy some more delicious Italian food – is there anything you haven’t tried yet?

Day 6: Naples and Sorrento

How the other half lived! Step into the luxurious life of some of Pompeii’s residents with a visit to the Stabiae Villa. Walk through this expansive rural villa, complete with wall paintings, lavish gardens, and peaceful ponds.

Continue down the coast to the hillside town of Sorrento. Enjoy some free time to souvenir shop and relax with a gelato!

Day 7: Farewell

Today marks the end of your Italy Classics school trip. Return to Rome and say arrivederci to Italy. Don’t worry though, legend has it if you threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain you’ll be back in the future!

Short on time? Don’t worry! We’ve planned an exciting 5-day itinerary which still shows students the best of Rome – plus, it features a full-day excursion to the beautiful archaeological site of Ostia Antica!
