South Korea: The Ideal School Trip Destination for History Students

We pride ourselves on being able to deliver educationally enriching school trips, tailored to the required learning outcomes of each individual group. History students will be fascinated to learn how South Korea has transformed from an impoverished Japanese colony into a global centre of cutting edge electronics and manufacturing. The country is becoming an ever more important player on the world stage, due to its booming industries as well as the gradual thawing of its relationship with its North Korean neighbours. We believe that there is no better way to enhance the study of history than to experience the location in question first hand. Here’s our run-down of the some of the best activities that you can do on a history school trip to South Korea.

Visit the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok village

Dating back to 1395, the imposing Gyeongbokgung Palace was once the principal residence of the Joseon dynasty, which ruled over Korea for over five centuries. The walls of the enormous palace grounds house around 500 buildings, which are in the process of restoration having been damaged or destroyed during the Japanese occupation.  Undoubtedly one of South Korea’s most important historical sites, students will have the chance to tour the palace grounds which include the National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum.

Discover Technological Advancement at Samsung D’light

The impressive exhibition space for Korea’s largest conglomerate Samsung, invites students to explore the company’s most innovative projects across a range of technologies. From robotics in the kitchen to virtual reality in the classroom, students will be given a glimpse into what their futures may hold.

Converse with a North Korean defector

North Korean citizens who escape the famously secretive dictatorship are automatically granted the right to resettle in the South.  Our trip includes a question and answer session with a North Korean defector, allowing students to gain an insight into life in the DPRK, as well as the cultural upheaval that comes with journeying from North to South Korea. A truly remarkable part of any history school trip to Korea.

Wander through the the gardens of Changdeokgung Palace

Another of the palaces built by the Joseon Dynasty, Changdeokgung is best known for its sprawling ornamental gardens. Originally used by the women of the palace, the beautiful gardens are now the perfect oasis away from the bright lights of Seoul. Students can look out for water features dating back to the 17th century and the five ornate pavilions contained within its walls.

Witness history in the making at the DMZ

One of the most visited tourist destinations in South Korea, is also one of its most historically pertinent. The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), is a strip of land between North and South Korea that serves as a buffer zone between the two ideologically opposed states. The zone also houses the Joint Security Area, in which negotiations between the two countries take place. Established at the end of the Korean War in 1953, the DMZ is heavily guarded on both sides to prevent invading forces from either state crossing the border. A truly remarkable part of any history school trip to South Korea.

Take a Cruise along the Han River

A cruise along the main river running through Seoul, provides students with the unmissable opportunity to observe and learn about the city. Look out for important landmarks such as Jeoldusan Park, the 63 Building and Yanghwa Bridge.

All activities mentioned are available on our school trips to South Korea. We customise your itinerary to fit your curriculum, offering your students the most personalised educational school trip possible.
