How to Find a School Trip Provider

Teachers know how rewarding, both educationally and recreationally, a school trip can be. But it can also be daunting, and sometimes it feels like providers take your money and then leave you alone. Here’s how to avoid that mistake and find a great school trip provider:

1) Communication

Chances are, if they’re not communicating well now, they’re not going to communicate with you when you’re abroad. Granted, companies are busy, and they might not to be able to get back to you within the hour, but stay clear of companies that take over half a week to respond or never answer the phone. When you’re out there, you want to trust that, if you have any problems, you’re in good hands.

2) Personal

If you’re looking for an educational school trip, avoid companies that churn out itineraries. They won’t fit your school’s curriculum. Instead, opt for a provider that truly listens and is happy to change things around to fit your students. Also, it’s a good idea to be keep an eye out for school trip companies that organise all their own activities, rather than outsourcing to other companies, like most do. When a travel company fully organises the school trips, it means their team have been through each activity with a fine-tooth comb, are best pals with the ground team and makes your trip cheaper!

3) Honesty

Yes, you want personal, great service. But it’s also important that you check your provider for honesty. Don’t go for the company that promises you everything for nothing. There’s great budget providers out there – but look for people who will tell you the truth when you ask, “I know this activity is more expensive, but will it really improve my students’ experience?” Not only will checking your provider’s history stop you from being disappointed by mediocre excursions you were promised would be amazing, it also means you don’t get any surprise bills.

TOP TIP: Look for providers that make it easy for you to see what’s included in the price. Sometimes budget providers seem great, but that’s because they’re sorting out less than half of the trip, and it’s down to you to do the rest. If you’re not sure, make sure.

4) Health & Safety

This one’s crucial. Look for a company that doesn’t stutter when you mention risk assessments. Being a teacher and organising a school trip can be stressful – you need a provider that’s going to be there with you every step of the way, and that includes the nitty gritty details of Health and Safety.

5) Track Record

It’s easy for companies to say they’re good. You need to see the proof. Check out the schools they’ve taken abroad and give them a ring. Ask if they’re everything you’re looking for.
